Abstract

Gas and like engines.-The air-pump plant of an internal-combustion engine consists of a lowpressure pump 1 with a reservoir 2 supplying air for scavenging, and a two-stage high-pressure airpump 3, 4 with a reservoir 5 supplying compressed air for starting. The pump 1, reservoir 2, and pump cylinder 3 are connected by a pipe 6, communicating with the atmosphere through a threeway cock 7. According to the position of this cock, the two pumps work independently, or the pump 1 serves as first-stage compressor to the pump 3, 4. The pressure in the reservoir 2 is controlled by a throttle valve 8 in the discharge.
