Abstract

22,308. Seeley, F. G. Nov. 1. Gas and like engines. - A twostroke-cycle engine has the air-pump cylinder in line with the power cylinder and of about twice its cross-section. Part of the compressed air enters the cylinder during the latter half of the power stroke, to complete the combustion, and another part sprays the fuel into the cylinder. The Figure shows in section the airpump B with inlet valve B<2> and outlet valves B<3>, B<4>, the former leading to an air port A<4> and the latter communicating with the fuel-supply device. During the first half of the in-stroke, air pumped through the port A<4> scavenges, out the products, and during the remainder of the stroke the air in the cylinder is compressed. At the same time, air is compressed into the port space B<2> until the valve B' is raised, when fuel is sprayed into the cylinder. Ignition is effected in any suitable manner, the heat of compression serving to vaporize the fuel. When the port A<4> is uncovered during the power stroke, the air enters as stated above to complete combustion and assist in driving the piston.
