Abstract

1371702 I C engines - fuel supply TEXTRON Inc 25 Feb 1972 8927/72 Heading F1B The invention relates to a method of injecting fuel into the combustion chamber of an I.C. engine particularly a two-stroke I. C. engine. The engine shown comprises a piston 15 which defines with the engine housing a combustion chamber 14 and a crank-case compression chamber 18, also an air inlet port 24, an exhaust port 28, a transfer port 27 and a cavity 32 formed in the wall of the chamber 14 and to which fuel is supplied through passage 30, the fuel being stored in the cavity during the down-stroke of the piston. As the piston moves downwardly during the firing stroke, air admitted through inlet port 24 is compressed in the crank-case 12. As the piston reaches the lower part of the stroke the exhaust port 28 is first opened, then the air transfer port 27 and then the fuel storage cavity 32, the air and fuel mixture then being compressed as the piston moves upwardly closing off the transfer and exhaust ports and fuel storage cavity. Fuel is supplied to the passage 30 and cavity 32 by means of a pump 43 which is operated by crank-case pressure communicated to the pump through line 44. Fuel passes from the pump through an idling valve 37 and a main flow valve 36 through line 34 and a ball type check-valve 35 to the passage 30. The position of the idling valve 37 is controlled by the throttle valve 26 in the air induction pipe 25 through linkage 42. The main flow valve 36 is controlled by a diaphragm actuator 39 in dependence on crank-case pressure which pressure is communicated to the actuator through line 41.
