Abstract

4158. Akt.-Ges. Brown, Boverle, & Cie. May 16,1911, [Convention date]. Direct explosion apparatus.-Relates to internalcombustion pumps and compressors working on the two-stroke cycle, and consists in a method of operation in which the column of liquid is split into a main and an auxiliary column oscillating substantially synchronously, induction of gas or combustible mixture into an auxiliary chamber taking place during the out-strokes of the columns, and transference of the mixture to the combustion chamber and compression by the main water column in that chamber taking place during the return stroke of the columns. In the arrangement shown, the auxiliary chamber f is fitted beside the combustion chamber a and is provided with inlet valves i, k through which combustible gas is drawn in during the out-stroke of the water columns in the chambers, and a valve j through which the gas is transferred to the combustion chamber a during the return strokes. Scavenging-air valves m, n may be fitted above and below the exhaust valve o, so that, at the moment when the valve o is shut by the return of the main column of water into the chamber a, a charge of pure air is shut off in the upper part of the chamber into which the combustible gas is injected through the perforated pipe l. When the pump has to deliver against a small head of pressure, the lower portion b of the combustion chamber may be made of greater area than the expansion portion a.
