3978. Gore, A. Feb. 21. Gas or explosive-vapour engines.-In order to prevent the main inlet valve a of an engine suitable for marine and motor-car work from being opened by the compressed air used for starting the engine, its stem is guided in a piston c of at least the same area as the valve, and a spring d is placed between the piston c and a collar e on the valve stem. The piston c has a stop c'. The compressed air is pumped into a reservoir k by a compressor h, and is admitted through a cock o to the carburettor n, and thence to the cylinder. A non-return valve p is fitted in the pipe m, through which air is admitted during normal working.
