Abstract

7517. Durrant, E. A. April 4. Gas and like engines.-In engines in which the exhaust gases are condensed in a jet condenser, the reduction in the cylinder pressure is utilized to draw off or aid in the drawing-off of the products of combustion, to draw in or aid in the drawing-in of a fresh charge, and to increase the force acting on the piston. In the two-stroke cycle doubleacting engine shown in Fig. 1, the products of combustion are led to a jet condenser J, Fig. 2, through a pipe C and common exhaust ports A<4> having a controlling-valve B' which opens at the end of the working stroke and closes after the piston has performed part of its instroke. The exhaust valve is actuated by a rocking-lever E', the lower end of which is engaged by a cam mounted on a shaft E, driven from the crank-shaft through toothed gearing and an inclined shaft H<1>. The jet condenser J, which also acts as an exhaust silencer and purifier, is exhausted by a pump K driven from the connecting-rod F through a beam L<1> and side rods L, L<2>. The exhaust ports may be located at the ends of the cylinder; the charge may also be supplied under pressure. Reversing.-A pair of cams may be mounted on a sleeve carried by a cam shaft E, the sleeve being moved endways for reversing purposes.
