Abstract

15,085. Tuckfield, C., and Garland, W. G. de F., and Jones, G. W. July 16. Gas and like engines.-The low-pressure piston of a compound engine is three or four times the area of the high-pressure piston, and is connected to a crank which is set about 250 degrees behind the high-pressure piston cranks. The Figure shows the application of the invention to a four-stroke cycle engine in which two high-pressure cylinders A exhaust alternately into a single low - pressure cylinder B placed between them. The exhaust from the cylinders A does not enter the cylinder B until the low-pressure piston has performed about one-ninth of its outward stroke. A suitable automatic valve F, opening outwards at atmospheric pressure, is fitted at the end of the pipe communicating with the exhaust port E. An automatic valve, situated in the cylinder head and prevented by mechanical means from opening outwards during the outstroke of the piston, may be substituted for the exhaust port E. The upper part of the cylinder B is lagged with suitable non-conducting material, while the lower portion is surrounded by a water-jacket D. A clearance space of about onethird of the capacity .of the high-pressure cylinder is allowed in the low-pressure cylinder. With the engine arranged in this manner, the low-pressure piston will perform two power strokes each revolution, one due to the pressure of the exhaust, and the other due to atmospheric pressure on the lower side of the piston.
