Abstract

869,046. Charging two-stroke engines, combustion product plant. DAIMLER-BENZ A.G. June 11, 1959 [June 11, 1958], No. 20051/59. Classes 7(1) and 7(2). A free piston engine comprises a double-acting induction air piston 11 and two combustion pistons 12, 13 forming a stepped piston wherein the piston 11 sucks air in through inlet slots 15 and pushes it through pipes 16, 18 without the use of valves, into one or other of the combustion cylinders 17, 19. The combustion cylinders work with loop or reverse loop scavenging on a twostroke cycle and have inlet slots 20, 21 and exhaust slots 22, 23, the exhaust gases passing through the pipes 24, 25, for expansion in a gas turbine. A throttle valve 27 may be provided in the air intake 26 to ensure full stroke working in partload conditions. In another embodiment two engines are arranged in series in the longitudinal axis of the engine, each piston of adjacent combustion pistons having its own combustion chamber and cylinder head.
