Abstract

1505144 Combined 2-stroke/4-stroke IC engine D G PRICE 5 March 1976 [5 March 1975] 9218/75 Heading F1B An engine comprises a pair of cylinders 3, 6, one cylinder 3 containing a piston 2 operating on a four-stroke cycle and reciprocating at twice the frequency of a piston 5 operating on a two-stroke cycle in the other cylinder 6. The pistons 2, 5 operate output shafts 8, 9 which are geared together so that the pistons have a common TDC position. Fuel is inducted through a port 12 at the base of the two-stroke cylinder and combusted gases are exhausted through a port 13. An induction fan and/or an exhaust fan may be provided and the ports 12, 13 may be valved. In a diesel engine a combustion chamber (not shown) may be provided by a pair of co-operating hemispherical hollows at the top of pistons 2, 5. The four-stroke piston preferably has a top surface area half of that of the two-stroke piston. In a modification the two- and four-stroke cylinders may be connected by a passage and arranged in a "V" or to extend alongside one another.
