Abstract

Gas and like engines.- Figs. 1 and 3 show in sectional elevation an internal-combustion engine in which the hydrocarbons are highly compressed before being injected into the cylinder. The piston 6 and plunger 10 of the cylinder 4, and hydrocarbon pump 5 are respectively operated by cranks 7, 11, the pump crank being set slightly in advance of the cylinder crank 7. A cam shaft 21 for operating the valves receives motion from the crank shaft through the helical gearing shown. G a s e o u s hydrocarbons are drawn into the pump cylinder 5 through the cam-operated valve 40, and on the up-stroke of plunger pass through the valve 56 to the chamber 51 surrounded by a cooling-jacket 52. On the downward stroke of the piston 6, slightly-compressed air enters the cylinder 4 through the cam-controlled valve 28, the first portions of which are used for expelling the exhaust gases through the port 24, while the other is compressed on the return stroke of the piston and passes to the end 57 of the cooling-chamber 51, the valve 56 being previously closed. On the working stroke of the cylinder piston 6, the charge is forced into the cylinder 4, through the camoperated valve 67, by the cam-operated piston 60 working in the chamber 58. The hydrocarbons and air in the cooling-chamber 51 are prevented from mixing, so that the hydrocarbons will enter the cylinder before the air.
