Abstract
551,519. Free-piston compressors and generators. PESCARA R. P. Aug. 1, 1940, No. 12478. ' Convention date, Aug. 4, 1939. [Classes 8 (i) and 102 (i)] [Also in Group XXVII] Air is compressed by a piston (or pistons) 6, Fig. 1, in a space 7' on the return or compression stroke of the motor piston 2<SP>1</SP> with which it moves in unison, this stroke being effected by air compressed on the out stroke in the space 10<SP>1</SP>. The compressed air may be delivered as scavenging and charging air through a valve 9 and port 3 to the combustion space, the motor exhaust and scavenging air passing through a pipe 5 to be used as a motive fluid. On an out stroke of exceptional length, a rod 17 strikes a lever 18 actuating in succession valves 19, 20, which allow air to pass through a pipe 72 to actuate the quantity control rod 21 of the motor fuel pump and through a pipe 73 to hold the pump piston rod away from its actuating cam and to throttle the motor exhaust pipe 5. Fig. 2 shows a modification in which the lever 18 actuates a simple valve by which the spill valve 30 of the fuel pump is controlled. Starting air may be supplied through a pipe 44 and an aperture in the rod 17 to a cylinder 42, the air passing through a valve 43 in a piston 41 to a space 39 and simultaneously to a chamber 46 where it acts on the piston 36 to move the lever 18 to diminish the starting strokes. On opening the space 42 to atmosphere, the piston 41 moves back, opening valve 40 to allow the starting air to move the piston 6<SP>1</SP>. The length of the normal stroke may be determined by the delivery pressure of the compressor, by connecting the delivery space with the cylinder enclosing the piston 36.
