Abstract
506,786. Controlling free - piston compressors. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON. Dec. 28, 1938, No. 37600. Convention date, Feb. 8. [Class 8 (i)] In an internal-combustion free-piston compressor in which the compression or combustion pressure in the combustion chamber is communicated to a control member actuating a fuel pump or other device, the pressure chamber of the control member, and preferably also the passage leading thereto, are scavenged periodic-. ally by air or inert gas. The working cylinder 3 contains two pistons 1, 2 controlling respectively exhaust at 20 and inlet at 21 supplied from pump chambers 11, 12, the cylinder pressure' being led by a pipe 26 to a control piston 24 actuating a fuel pump 25 injecting fuel past a valve 8. The passage 26 and the cylinder of the piston 24 are scavenged by air or inert gas admitted under pressure at 30 past a check valve 31 during the scavenging period of the working cylinder. Alternatively, air or gas may be supplied periodically by means of engine-operated poppet or slide valves. Also, the passage 32 may be-arranged , to give the air or inert gas a whirling motion in the piston chamber 24.
