600,425. Crosshead scavenge pumps. PETERSEN, O. Oct. 5, 1945, No. 26038. Convention date, Jan. 7, 1944. [Class 7 (ii)] An internal-combustion engine has a piston crosshead 5 working in a cylinder guide 9 forming a double - acting scavenge pump closed at the top by a head 27, containing a stuffing - box joint for the piston-rod 4, and closed at the bottom by a sliding plate 28 containing a seal which, together with the said sliding plate, forms a compression head whilst the connecting- rod 6 oscillates. The inlet ports 10 and 11 feed the top and bottom chambers of the pump respectively and the pressure valves 12 and 13 communicate with a common duct 14 communicating with the scavenge ports 15 of a doubleacting internal - combustion engine using uniflow scavenging through poppet valves 16 and 17 which may be operated from a common cam-shaft 22 or from the engine crank-shaft 8. The valve 17 is bored to allow the passage of the piston-rod 4 and is returned to its seat by springs 26. The engine may also be of the single-acting type and may employ uniflow or transverse scavenging.
