Abstract
773,879. Two-stroke engines ; valves. AMM, R. M. Feb. 18, 1955 [Nov. 18, 1953 ; Feb. 24, 1954; and April 8, 1954], Nos. 32008/53, 5495/54, and 10404/54. Classes 7 (2) and 7 (6). [Also in Group XXVIII] A single or double-acting pump or compressor comprising co-axially disposed pistons 16 or diaphragms arranged to reciprocate within a one-part or multi-part cylinder 10 having fluid tight partitions 11 between the pistons or diaphragms and heads 12, 13 at opposite ends of the cylinder, has separate chambers 15 on opposite sides of the pistons or diaphragms and inlet and outlet ports associated therewith. In the embodiment of Fig. 1, inlet and exhaust manifolds 21 and 22 are formed in extensions 23, 24 of the cylinder and partitions. Each partition has inlet ports 25, 26 controlled by spring loaded plate or poppet valves 29 or 32, and outlet ports controlled by spring loaded plate valves 39, 40 or a single valve element 49. In other embodiments the inlet and outlet ports in the partitions are controlled by a rotary valve driven at half engine speed, or by a sleeve valve or disc valves rotated at engine speed, or by slide valves reciprocated at engine speed. In a further embodiment the separate sets of valves in the various cylinder compartments are replaced by a single valve controlling the inlet ports on one side of the pistons and another single valve on the opposite side, and similarly two single valves controlling the exhaust ports on opposite sides. In a single acting embodiment controlled by automatic valves, one valve is provided in each piston. The pistons 16 may be replaced by diaphragms attached to the rod 14 and clamped between dished discs which replace the partitions 11 and cylinder sections 10. Fig. 13 shows a pump attached to a twostroke I.C. engine having inlet ports 113, 115 and an outlet port 116. The inlet manifold is divided in two parts 105 and 106 by a partition 107, and the outlet manifold into parts 108, 109 by a partition 110. The upper parts 105, 108 supply air fuel mixture to the cylinder 114 through a rotary valve 112, while the'lower parts 106, 109 supply scavenging air through the piston controlled port 115.
