Abstract

553,629. Two-stroke engines valve-gear. MICKELSEN, V., and REBBECK, Sir F.E. May 4, 1942, No. 5957. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] In a two-stroke single-acting engine of the crosshead type in which scavenging air is supplied to each cylinder 5 from a compression space 16 behind the power piston 4, two or more single-acting air compressor cylinders 13 are arranged parallel to each power cylinder 5 and deliver to the space 16, the compressor pistons 14 being actuated directly from the engine crosshead 9 in unison with the power piston. As shown, the compressor cylinders and the space 16 communicate with a common suction chamber 11 provided with air-inlet valves 17. Each power cylinder 5 has pistoncontrolled inlet ports 29 for the scavenging air and an exhaust valve 7 in the cylinder head ; the ports 29 are also controlled by an external slide valve 28 carried by rods 23 connected by a yoke 24 to the stem of the exhaust valve. The rods are connected at their lower ends to bellcranks 22 each carrying a roller 22c actuated by one of a pair of cams 21 on the crosshead shoe 20.
