Abstract

872,739. Free-piston engines. RICHARDSONS, WESTGARTH & CO. Ltd. Sept. 23, 1958 [Sept. 25, 1957], No. 30087/57. Class 7(1). In a free-piston engine comprising a cylinder 10 having a combustion space at or near each end and a free piston 16 arranged to be driven back and forth by the products of combustion, the cylinder has one or more inlets 18 connected to the delivery side of a blower or compressor 38 which is arranged to be driven by means other than the free piston and one or more outlets 28, 30 connected to a gas turbine 34 so that the turbine receives and is driven by products of combustion discharged under pressure from the cylinder, the cylinder also having one or more further outlets 20 which are so arranged as to be uncovered by the piston at or near the end of its stroke for the purpose of discharging from the cylinder the remaining products of combustion. Separate inlet and exhaust ports may be provided for each combustion chamber. As shown, the piston has extensions 32 with ports 60, 61 therein. In a modification the piston extensions are dispensed with. The gas may be released from the cylinder by a valve or valves which are loaded so as to open at a pressure exceeding that in the cylinder before combustion takes place. In another modification, a pair of pistons are rigidly joined together by a connecting rod having a cam which operates a pair of fuel pumps. The fuel control mechanism may be operated by the compression pressure in the combustion chamber. Two or more free-piston engine units may be contained in the same cylinder block.
