Abstract

815,494. Air compressors. CROSSLEY BROS. Ltd., and CARTER, H. D. June 25, 1957 [June 1, 1956], No. 16957/56. Class 8(1). [Also in Group XXVII] Exhaust gases from the or each cylinder b, Fig. 4, of a two-stroke I.C. engine directly actuate a piston or pistons h, o pumping air to the cylinder b directly or via an inlet manifold. A mechanically actuated valve e temporarily interrupts communication with the exhaust manifold at the time of discharge from the cylinder b to cause the exhaust gases to drive back a piston extension g, a further piston extension k in a "bounce" cylinder m returning the piston or pistons h, o, possibly to assist supercharging by returning to the cylinder b compressed air which has passed out of the exhaust port d. In modifications, (1) the piston extension g is dispensed with, the exhaust gases acting directly on a single-acting piston h, which may have a double-acting piston o associated therewith, (2) the piston extension k is dispensed with, the piston h, or o if provided, being single-acting and itself working in a "bounce" cylinder, (3) the valve e is dispensed with, the extension g controlling communication with the exhaust manifold f and (4) the "bounce" cylinder is dispensed with, single pistons h, with or without extensions g and operated from alternately exhausting cylinders b, being connected to opposite ends of a centrally pivoted lever.
