Abstract
The secondary piston (PS) is above the main piston (PP) and linked to it by a compression spring (R). On the power stroke the spring is compressed and the two pistons descend together. From the bottom dead centre the spring returns the secondary piston more quickly than the main piston and the space between them uncovers the admission port (Ad) through which a fresh charge is drawn in. As the main piston moves up it compresses the charge and pushes it through the transfer passage (C) to the space above the secondary piston where combustion takes place. Exhaust is through a poppet valve (S) in the cylinder head.
