Abstract
The combined internal combustion engine and air compressor has a common cylinder block (1) containing an engine cylinder (5), a compressor cylinder (40) and an air cushion cylinder (38). The engine is started, by supplying compressed air to the air cushion cylinder, which drives the engine cylinder (2) to the left to make its compression stroke as the compressor piston (3) draws in air through the valve (16). The charge in the engine cylinder (5) is fired, and the piston moves to the right, compressing the air in the compressor cylinder (40). When the engine piston has uncovered the port (8), the rise in pressure in the air cushion cylinder reverses the piston direction.
