Abstract
The engine operates on a four stroke cycle. The inlet valve remains open for part of the compression stroke so that some mixture is returned into the manifold. When the valve closes the mixture in the cylinder is compressed and ignition takes place near top dead centre. The next stroke is the working one. Expansion takes place over the whole stroke so that the expansion ratio is greater than the compression ratio. This permits exhaust to take place at a reduced pressure and increases the output.
