Abstract

[Also in Division H2] In a free piston engine whose compression stroke is obtained by pneumatic restoring springs and whose starting is obtained by compressed air at least two restoring spring operating in parallel are provided a first of which serves at the same time for starting with compressed air and comprises the rear end of the engine cylinder and the piston thereof and the second comprises another piston and cylinder arrangement 4, 10 of larger diameter mechanically linked to the first spring each spring having pneumatic valve means for the inspiration and/or exhaust of air. During a transition period immediately following starting the potential energy of the first spring diminishes by the exhaust of excess compressed air, whilst mean pressure in the second spring increases by inspiration of air. The first spring, comprises at least one port communicating with the induction or exhaust conduits of the free piston engine the port being opened when the engine piston or pistons is/are situated at the inner dead centre and the second spring comprises at least one port arranged substantially centrally of the travel of its piston and connected by means of one or more inlet valves for inspiration from the atmosphere. A compressed air starting valve 16 is arranged in a conduit connected to the first spring so that after starting the excess compressed air in the first spring is discharged through the port or ports of the first spring whilst air is inspired through the valve or valves of the second spring. The second restoring spring may comprise in the outer end of the cylinder one or more decantation ports. Two or more identical engines each having two opposed free pistons may be arranged in parallel and corresponding chambers of the springs thereof may be connected to one another by conduits. The invention is particularly applicable to free-piston alternators. The second springs may be arranged outwardly of the electrical parts of the alternator.
