Abstract
605,010. Free - piston gas generators. VICKERS-ARMSTRONGS, Ltd., and DAVIS, D. E. Dec. 11, 1945, No. 33541. [Class 7 (i)] In an opposed-piston free-piston internal combustion engine gas generator an arrangement for arresting the pistons in the event of overstrokes due to the working cylinder receiving an excessive charge of fuel comprises a chamber 7 at each end of the generator which communicates with a corresponding cushion cylinder 4 through ports 8 which are masked as the pistons approach their outward limit of travel the greater part of the outward stroke being resisted by compression of air in the cushion cylinder and the chambers which offers a comparatively low pressure cushioning action while towards the outer limit of travel the ports are masked and compression takes place in the cylinder 4 in which the pressure rises rapidly in the manner of a high-pressure cushion. The arrangement avoids the disadvantage of high-pressure cushion cylinders which overheat and combines the advantages of high-pressure and low-pressure cushions. As shown, compression takes place-between the outer faces of enlargements 5 of the pistons and the ends of the co-operating cylinders. The positions of the cushion cylinders and of the compression spaces may be interchanged or the cushion spaces may be at the outer end of a compressor cylinder in which compression takes place on an inward stroke. The chambers 7 may extend only partly around the cushion cylinders.
