Abstract

1,091,720. Free-piston engines. SULZER BROS. Ltd. Sept. 13, 1966 [Sept. 24, 1965], No.40841/66. Heading F1B. A free-piston engine has two main pistons whose working cycles are mutually displaced by a half phase and each of which has a synchronizing piston 10 which moves with the main piston in a synchronizing cylinder 11 for a hydraulic fluid, the two synchronizing cylinders being interconnected by a passageway. As shown the engine contains four piston groups each of which consists of a central compressor piston 1 and two internal combustion engine pistons 2 one at each end. Gas cushions are formed at the end of each stroke in the compression chambers of the internal combustion cylinders or the compressor cylinders. It is possible to provide additional buffer chambers containing gas cushions and if necessary further synchronizing and centering means described in Specification 1, 090, 989. Mechanical stops with springs forming buffers may however also be employed for this purpose.
