Abstract
496,610. Two-stroke and four-stroke engines. HAMMER, A. A. H., and REBBECK, F. E. Oct. 18, 1937, No. 28271. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] In a compressionignition engine charged by a pump c, the air is first throttled in passing a valve a controlled simultaneously with the fuel supply and then allowed to expand in a chamber b having not substantially less than half the total cylinder capacity of the engine ; the air is thus heated, and at low speeds a back pressure is produced, which causes exhaust to be retained in the engine cylinders. The valve a may be a rotary hit- and-miss valve as shown; the engine may operate on a two-stroke or a four-stroke cycle, the pump being either a rotary pump or formed by the underside of the working piston. A multi-cylinder engine may be operated by a single pump c and chamber b.
