Abstract
1407789 Four-stroke engines TERRYTUNE DEVELOPMENTS Ltd 28 Sept 1972 [28 Sept 1971] 13096/75 Divided out of 1407207 Heading F1B In a compression ignition engine having a single inlet valve 5 and a single exhaust valve 6 for each cylinder, the area of the exhaust valve of each cylinder is at least 7% greater than that of the inlet valve. An existing engine may be modified by the provision of a replacement cylinder head. Fuel may be injected into a pre-combustion chamber (12'), Fig. 1 (not shown), communicating with the main chamber through a passage (16) in a chamberdefining insert (17). The exhaust valve area may be from 15 to 65% greater than the inlet valve area. A numerical example of the inlet and exhaust valve diameters in original and modified form is given in the Specification.
