1389377 Charging I C engines T G KEE 19 April 1973 [21 April 1972] 19115/73 Heading Fl An I.C. engine including a crank-case and a cylinder block has at least a pair of pistons reciprocatable in unison in a pair of side by side parallel cylinders, the pistons being moved in unison to a t.d.c. position to induce gas into the crank-case and are movable in unison to a b.d.c. to displace the gas alternately into one or other of the cylinders for compression therein. On rising to t.d.c. the combusted gas in cylinder 14 is expelled via valve 32 and duct 34 whilst fresh gas is compressed in cylinder 16 for spark or compression ignition. Simultaneously gas is drawn through an induction valve (not shown) into the crankcase via inlets 36. The induction valve may be a reed, sleeve, disc or poppetvalve or the crank-shaft may act as a valve. On combustion in cylinder 16 pistons 18, 20 descend to drive the gas from the crank-case via a transfer passage 28 and valve 30 into cylinder 14. On rising again with valves 30, 32 closed the gas in cylinder 14 is compressed while valve 32 of cylinder 16 is opened to expel the combusted gas. Thereafter further firing in cylinder 14 causes both pistons to descend to repeat the cycle. The engine may consist of multiples of pairs and have one or more crank-shafts.
