Abstract

1298665 Two-stroke I. C. engines B HOOPER 28 Jan 1970 [3 Jan 1969] 422/69 Heading F1B The pumping part 16 of a stepped-piston 14 forces the charge on the upstroke through a port 36, controlled by a piston recess 38, 39, into a receiver 30 having a movable wall formed by a diaphragm 32. Near the bottom of the downstroke the top of the piston 14 uncovers the port 36 and the charge flows from the receiver 30 into the cylinder 12. The diaphragm 32 is subjected, on the side opposite the receiver 30, to the pressure in the crank-case 13, the force of a spring (46), Fig.3 (not shown), or the pressure in a chamber (52), Fig.4 (not shown), connected to an air or fuel-air mixture bleed from the engine providing a substantially constant pressure. On the piston upstroke the diaphragm 32 moves to increase the receiver volume and on the downstroke it moves to decrease the receiver volume. In a multi-cylinder engine a separate receiver 30 is provided for each cylinder and the crankcase 13 may be divided into respective chambers. The total volume of the receiver 30 and the passage 35 leading to the cylinder 12 is between three and twelve times the pumping swept volume, preferably between four and six times. The pumping cylinder inlet 22 is connected to a carburetter and contains a reed valve 23. The volume of the crank-case 13 may be such that the pressure therein during engine operation is substantially constant.
