Abstract

1440453 Compressors A MOIROUX and F BERNARD 4 July 1973 [6 July 1972] 33301/73 Heading F1N A compressor comprises a compression unit incorporating a piston 3 slidable in a cylinder 6, an I.C. engine unit incorporating a piston 2 slidable in a cylinder 5, and a unit in which air is compressed by the power stroke of the engine unit, the air thus compressed serving to force piston 2 back to effect its compression stroke, this last "bounce" unit comprising a piston 4 slidable in a cylinder 7, the pistons 2, 3, 4 all constituting part of a single integral member 1. Cooling vanes 13, 31 are provided around the combustion cylinder and a casing 25 which defines the bounce cylinder, a discharge chamber 32 and engine accessories including at least starting means 28. To start the compressor, compressed air in a chamber 29 is released via a valve into a starting chamber 27 to urge piston 4 to the left, valve 28 uncovering the end of cylinder 7. During movement of member 1 to the left, the chamber to the right of piston 3 draws in air through valves 22. The chamber to the left of piston 3 discharges air into an inlet reservoir 15 for the I.C. engine unit. Piston 2 performs its compression stroke, compressing air admitted from reservoir 15 into cylinder 5 via ports 12. When the compression stroke is completed, injector 9 feeds fuel to the space and combustion takes place, urging member 1 to the right. During this movement ports 34 in piston 2 co-operate with inlet and outlet ports 12, 11 to permit cooling and scavenging air to pass through piston 2 into the discharge channel 16 of the I.C. engine unit. The chamber to the left of piston 3 takes in air through valves 19, whilst the chamber to the right of piston 3 compresses the gas and discharges it into discharge chamber 32. Piston 4 compresses air in cylinder 7, the valve 28 closing the end of the cylinder. At the end of the power stroke, the air thus compressed in cylinder 7 returns the member 1 to the left and the cycle is repeated.
