Abstract

184,838. Douglas, J. April 18, 1821. Two-stroke-cycle engines. - In a twostroke engine in which each combustion space is formed between a pair of pistons working one inside the other and connected to oppositely-disposed cranks, reciprocating parts of equal weight are connected to a balanced arrangement of opposed cranks of equal throw from opposite sides of the crank-shaft, or to cranks having different throws but equal mass moments, one of the pistons of each pair actuating the crank-shaft through a connecting-rod lying on the opposite side of the crank-shaft. In an engine having two opposed cylinders a, b, pairs of opposed outer pistons c, d and inner pistons e, f are connected by coupling-rods c\ e<1> respectively. The crank-shaft h has a large crank-pin h' linked by a connecting-rod i to the inner piston f, and two smaller crank-pins linked by a forked connecting-rod j to the outer piston c on the side opposite to the piston f, the inner piston e being cut away to allow the movement of the gudgeon j<1>. A charge admitted to the crank-case passes through piston-controlled ports c<9> to an annular pump space a<1> and to the combustion chamber between the cylinders, and is exhausted through ports c<4>, a<2> in the outer piston and the cylinder. A pump spaca a<3> in the cylinder head may be connected to the space a<1> by a conduit a<4> cast on the cylinder. In the case of a singlecylinder engine, the inner piston is coupled to an opposed piston linked by a connecting-rod to the crank-shaft, the opposed piston being idle or serving as a mixture pump in addition to an annular pump space such as a.
