[Class 80 (iii)] [Also in Group XXVII] In a radial-cylinder engine of the kind in which each piston or cylinder is connected to a Z-type crankshaft 12 to be completely reciprocated once on each revolution of the shaft, the axes of the cylinder, the inclined crank-pin 11, and the crankshaft all meeting in one point, the engine works on a two-stroke cycle and either the admission valve or the exhaust valve, or both, are constituted by a cylinder port controlled by the elliptical motion of the piston or cylinder connected to the crankshaft. Fig. 1 shows a flat twin two-stroke engine with crank-case compression, the pistons 16 being connected by connecting-rods 15 to lugs 14 on a sleeve 13 journalled on the crank-pin 11 ; the chain lines 15a show the positions of the connecting-rods when the pistons are at incentre. Admission and exhaust ports 17, 18 are piston-controlled. In a modification, Fig. 2, having two pairs of cylinders in radial planes at right angles to each other, ported cylinders 24 reciprocating upon fixed pistons 16 and in stationary cylinder blocks 21 are connected to inclined crank-pins 11 separated by an intermediate bearing portion. The charge is compressed in the outer ends of the cylinders 21 by the ends 33 of the cylinders 24 and delivered through ports 30 to a receiver, whence it is admitted through ports 30, 29 to the interior of the cylinders 24 and exhausted through ports 31. In a multiple-bank radial engine, Fig. 4, the pistons 16 and cylinders 24 are connected to lugs on opposite ends of sleeves 13 on the inclined crankpins 11 so that the piston and cylinder are oppositely reciprocated. The connecting-rods 15 may be forked for connection to pairs of trunnions on the ends of the sleeve 13. Specification 559,737 is referred to.
