Abstract

Valves.-To vary the piston stroke in an engine using a rocking beam, the connecting-rod, e.g. 15, Fig. 1, is adjustably secured to a beam having guideways upon which slides a slipper 13 carried by the rod. The beam oscillates about a fixed shaft 9 and the adjustment of the connecting-rod is effected by rotating a nut 32 in the interior of which works a screw 13 secured to the end of the rod. The driving-mechanism is shown in Fig. 1 applied to a two-stroke-cycle engine in which a pair of cylinders 1 having a common combustion space are charged by a pump having oppositelymoving pistons 2 connected to a pair of rocking- beams 8. Rotary valves 4, driven at the speed of the crank shaft, are located one at each end of the pump delivery passage 22. Towards the end of the exhaust stroke, the lower valve 4 being closed, an air charge trapped between the valves is admitted to the cylinder for scavenging prior to the admission of the main charge.
