Abstract

182,831. Owen, E. H. Jan. 13, 1921. Regulating.-To regulate the speed' and power of two- and four-stroke engines, the normal charges are supplemented by variable additional charges supplied by pumps, the clearance in the working cylinders being adjusted in accordance with the total weight of charge admitted thereto. Fig. 2 illustrates a four-stroke engine having a pump 2 for supplying additional charges to the working cylinders 4 through the valves 3, 4<A>. The pump piston is secured by rods 6, 7 to a crank 8 geared to a shaft carrying the main crank 11. A slipper 14 secured to the rods 6, 7 slides on an arc-shaped guide 15, which is turned about the shaft 16 to vary the stroke of the pump. Mounted in the head of the cylinder 4 is a piston 26 for varying the cylinder clearance. The piston is controlled by a cam or eccentric 25 actuated through worm gearing 23, 24, the worm 23 being adjusted simultaneously with the stroke of the pump piston by a shaft 22 connected through gearing and linkage to the end 17 of the guide 15. Fig. 3 shows one of a pair of cylinders 4 and a double-acting charging pump 2 for a twostroke engine in which the piston 3 compresses and delivers to the combustion space a normal charge. When the exhaust port B is uncovered, an additional scavenging-charge is supplied from one end of the pump, a further charge being delivered from the opposite end of the pump when the exhaust port is closed. The pump stroke and the piston 26 for varying the clearance are adjusted as described with reference to Fig. 2. A modified construction of engine is described in which a normally reciprocating and adjustable piston replaces the stationary piston 26 in the cylinder head. According to further modifications, (1) the main piston slides in an outer cylindrical sleeve which is adjustable to vary the clearance, and (2) part of the cylinder charges are rejected during compression through a series uf valves opening in succession, in the cylinder head. Each of the engines according to the invention operates (1) with its normal charge only, (2) with its normal charge supplemented by one or more pump charges, or (3) with pump charges only.
