Abstract

658,894. Opposed-piston two-stroke engines. NAPIER & SON, Ltd., D. April 11, 1949, No. 9767. '[Class 7(ii)] [Also in Group XXVI] An I.C. engine comprises three crankcases A, A<SP>1</SP>, A<SP>2</SP> each containing a six throw crankshaft B, B<SP>1</SP>, B<SP>2</SP> whose axes lie on the apices of a triangle, cylinder blocks C, C<SP>1</SP>, C<SP>2</SP> containing six open-ended cylinders extend between each adjacent pair of crankcases and each cylinder contains two pistons D connected by a master connecting rod G and a subsidiary connecting rod H respectively to the two crankshafts between which the cylinders extend, the subsidiary rod H being pivotally connected (see Group XXVI) to a master connecting rod G of an adjacent cylinder in the next cylinder block so that each crankpin B<SP>3</SP> of each crankshaft is coupled to two pistons. The engine operates on the two stroke cycle and is fed with scavenging and charging air through delivery volutes F<SP>3</SP> from a centrifugal compressor F<SP>4</SP> secured to one end of the engine and having an air intake F<SP>5</SP>.
