Abstract

580,704. Piston pumps for two-stroke engines. DOXFORD & SONS, Ltd., W., and PURDIE, W. H. July 18, 1944, No. 13760. [Class 7 (ii)] In a six-cylinder engine in which the firing order is 153624 or 142635 three scavenging pumps are arranged laterally of, and driven from, the crossheads of cylinders numbered 1 2 3, or 4 5 6, respectively; balance of the primary and secondary forces, and the couples set up by the reciprocating masses, is thus ensured. An opposed-piston engine is described in which the pistons 12, 13 are connected by piston rods 14 and crossheads 15, and by yokes 20 and external coupling rods and crossheads not shown, respectively to the crankshaft 18, so that the pistons 12 have longer strokes . than the pistons 13. The scavenging pumps are double-acting and comprise cylinders 36 having large bore and pistons 37 having short stroke and being connected by linkage and rocking levers to the crossheads 15. Suction valves 39 communicate with air intakes 42 and silencers 41 and delivery valves 40 communicate through pipes 43 with a receiver 32 extending along the engine. The pump drives are 'thus phased angularly at 120 degrees, and their delivery corresponds to the six scavenging periods of the engine. Specification 560,955 is referred to.
