Abstract

Crank-chambers; pumps, rotary; cylinders, arrangement of ports in.- In a two-stroke-cycle engine combustible mixture is supplied by a rotary .ccmpressor at a pressure of between 12 and 20 lbs. per square inch either to two pairs of diametrically opposed piston-controlled ports 17 or to a single large port 19 controlled by an overhead valve 21, the alternative ports acting as exhaust ports. The valve 21 and the sparking-plug 24 are in the same plane but oppositely inclined to the cylinder axis. The invention is applied to a three cylinder engine with cranks set at 120‹ and in which the cylinder block and the crank-case are each formed as a single -casting. A slot connects the cylinder apertures and an end aperture 12 is provided in the crank-case so that after the cylinder block has been re- - moved, the pistons, connecting rods and the crank-shaft and its bearings can be removed as a unit. The rotary compressor is driven by gearing 34, 35, 36 from the crank-shaft, the compressor being mounted on an extension 40 attached to the crank-case.
