Abstract

128,641. Ricardo, H. R. Aug. 21, 1917. Compression engines.-In two- and four-strokecycle engines, the cylinders are disposed radially in four or more parallel planes with the pistons in each plane connected to a common crank-pin on a shaft having its cranks set at 180 degrees apart.' Fig. 2 shows a four-stroke-cycle engine having sixteen cylinders arranged in four planes, the cranks being set as illustrated. Explosions occur simultaneously in cylinder 1 of unit D and cylinder 3 of unit C, and then simultaneously in cylinder 1 of unit B and cylinder 3 of unit A &c. A two-stroke-cycle engine is described in which each of four parallel planes contains a pair of diametrically opposite cylinders. Planes containing the crank-shaft axis and the axes of the cylinders are separated by 90 degrees. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 132,282.
