Abstract
681,849. Crank-chambers; cylinders. REID, T. Nov. 9, 1950 [Sept. 27, 1949], No. 24736/49. Class 7 (ii). In a two-stroke internal-combustion engine of the kind wherein a pair of pistons 19, 20, Fig. 1, is subjected to the same impulse the engine comprising a pair of cylinders 14, 16 arranged sideby-side and having a common combustion space 22, two crank-shafts 26, 27 each connected to one of the pistons and gearing 31 constraining the two crank-shafts to rotate at equal speeds in the correct direction, one cylinder 14 having an exhaust port 15 and the other cylinder 16 having an inlet port 17, which ports are piston controlled, the fuel/air mixture is introduced through the inlet port directly into the combustion space 22 and the crank-shaft which is associated with the cylinder- 14 embodying the exhaust port 15 is arranged to enable the associated piston 19 to open the exhaust port 15 before the inlet port 17 opens and to close the exhaust port before the inlet port is closed. The cylinders 14, 16 are inclined toward closed. The cylinders 14,16 are inclined toward each other, the angle between them being about 15 degrees whilst the left-hand piston 19 leads approximately 15 degrees the right-hand piston 20; the sparking plug is arranged in the combustion space 22 so that it inclines toward the right-hand cylinder 16. Both the inlet and exhaust ports 17, 15 extend substantially around the circumference of their respective cylinders and each is divided into a number of apertures 18, Fig. 2, which combine to form the port; the charge is fed to the inlet port by a rotary displacement blower (not shown). A casing for the gear wheels 31 is secured to the common crankcase 29.
