Compression engines; driving- gear.-One or more cylinders or pairs of cylinders containing oppositely moving pistons are arranged one above and another below a crank-shaft f. In a four-cylinder engine, a pair of pistons is secured to each of the cross-heads d, e which are connected to cranks h by return rods i, j, k, l. In a two-cylinder engine, the connecting-rods are duplicated on each side of the engine. When working as a two-stroke-cycle engine, the ends of the cylinders adjacent the cross-heads form compression pumps for the working charges.
