Abstract

Four-stroke-cycle engines; driving-gear; pumps, centrifugal. - The expansion ratio is made greater than the compression ratio by using two pistons in each cylinder, one 2 driving the main crank shaft 1, the other 8 connected to a half-speed shaft 3. The diagram, Fig. 5, shows in dotted lines the movements of the two pistons, the full line curve representing the volume of the working chamber during a cycle. The charge is supplied by a fan, the admission taking place as shown on the diagram from the point a, to b, compression b to c. The charge is ignited and expands to point d, the exhaust taking place from d to e. One or both of the pistons has a mushroom head of less diameter than the piston but filling up the space between the pistons at the end of the compression stroke. The crank throws on the two shafts are unequal. The fan is driven from the spindle of one of the wheels in the train connecting the crank shafts. The halfspeed piston 8 may control terminal exhaust ports. In a modified arrangement the main pistons 21 Fig. 6 are in the upper parts of the cylinders, adjacent pairs being connected to a common cross-head and thence by outside-rods to the main crank shaft 23<a>; the two sets of main cranks are at 180‹ to each other. The half-speed pistons in one cylinder pair are spaced at 180‹ to each other and in a plane at 90‹ to the plane containing the other pair. The pistons may be unequal in diameter.
