369,751. Four- and two-stroke engines. MAHER, B. S., 297, Lenox Avenue, Oakland, California, U.S.A. March 27, 1931, No. 9385. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi).] A pump piston 5 is driven at twice the speed of the power piston 4 and delivers air past a check valve to a chamber 18 ; this is in communication with the power cylinder through a second check valve 24. Liquid fuel injectors 23, 25 are mounted in the chamber 18 and power cylinder. Working as a two stroke engine the pump delivers a first charge to the chamber 18 whence it flows into the power cylinder while its piston is on the up stroke ; this charge is compressed so that fuel when injected ignites by the heat of compression. The second air charge from the pump has fuel injected thereto in the chamber 18, the products acting on the power piston during the second half of its power stroke. When working on a four-stroke cycle, three pump cylinder charges are collected in the chamber 18 before they flow into the power cylinder wherein this charge is compressed and fuel added and burnt. A fourth pump charge flows in'to the chamber 18 and fuel is burnt in this charge ; these four pump charges are obtained during the two revolutions of the engine shaft. Cylinders.-The exhaust valve 26 is carried by the power piston and is opened when its stem 27 strikes a partition in an exhaust pipe 30; a fan is used to draw out the exhaust. Valves.-The check valve 24 is composed of two parts, a central beat valve 33 seating on an outer ring valve 34 ; the central part opens at lower pressure than the outer part.
