Abstract

231,604. Hutchinson, G. V. V. Jan. 12, 1924. Driving-gear. - A multi-cylinder engine comprises units arranged on each side of a common crank-shaft F, each unit consisting of two cylinders with pistons acting on a beam C. Arms formed on the beams or fixed on the rock shafts M transmit the drives to the crank shaft through connecting rods E. As applied to a locomotive, two such sets are arranged side by side and drive cranks at 90‹, and at opposite ends of the shaft F. The transmission from the beam may be through radius arms which are coupled to the connecting rods. Where the units are close to each other the framing may be cut away to allow for removal of the crank-shaft. Where piston rods and cross-heads are used with the pistons, the connection to the beams allow for the necessary freedom of movement. The arrangement may be applied to opposed piston engines.
