Abstract
212,588. Lucas, S. J. Sept. 15, 1922. Motor power plant.-A balanced arrangement of engine units for locomotives comprises a pair of parallel crank shafts with the respective cranks maintained at 180‹ to each other and sets of opposed and aligned cylinders, the parts being so arranged that the total weights of the reciprocating parts associated with each crank shaft are equal and that the piston movements are equal and opposite, wherein the crank shafts are each geared to a jack crank shaft arranged to drive a coupling rod system through which the drive is transmitted to the running wheels. The Figure shows an arrangement in which crank shafts a<3>, a<4>, to each of which four pistons are connected, drive through gearing h, i and h<1>, i<1> jack shafts f<1>, f<2> which are connected by a coupling rods j with the locomotive driving wheels k. Engines using steam and combustion products may be used.
