[Class 79 (i)] [Also in Group XXVI] A high-speed steam engine for locomotives is made up of two parallel cylinder blocks 1, the crankshafts 1a of which co-operate with an intervening drive shaft 5 through the intermediary of tooth gearing 4, 6, the arrangement being such that the crankshafts rotate in the same direction and the drive shaft 5 extends completely through the space between the two blocks. The shaft 5 may be the wheel axle or may be mounted on the locomotive frame and drive the wheel axle through any suitable coupling. Each driving axle of the locomotive may have its own driving unit. A shaft 3 is geared to the crankshaft and in turn to the cam shafts over each cylinder block. Corresponding cylinders of each of the two blocks are arranged with crankshafts at 180‹. The counter-shaft 5 and the crankshafts 1a are mounted within a common casing 2 which is built up with welded sheet metal plates. For facilitating dis-assembly the bottom casing is divided along a plane containing the shaft axes. Each crankshaft 1a has at both ends pinions 4 which engage with two large gear wheels 6 at the ends of the counter shaft 5 although a drive at one end only may be utilized. With uniflow engines the common exhaust chambers 12 are connected by a pipe 13 leading to the blast pipe.
