452,253. Steam engines. SCHWEIZERISCHE LOKOMOTIV-UND MASCHINENFABRIK, Winterthur, Switzerland. Dec. 20, 1935, No. 35310. Convention date, Dec. 24, 1934. [Class 122 (iii)] [See also Group XXXI] A high-speed steam engine is arranged between the driving-wheels of a vehicle, and drives thom through toothed gearing f, g, and universal couplings. The wheel g is mounted upon a hollow-shaft h which surrounds the driving-axle i, and the shaft h is mounted on the underside of the engine substantially adjacent the cross-head guides. The universal coupling shown consists of springs l<1> interposed between abutments on brackets l on the wheel g and on the wheel spokes k<1>. The casing a is screwed to cross beams b. Three-cylinders c project from the casing. The engine is suspended about its centre of gravity. All the axles of the vehicle may be similarly driven, or they may be connected by rods, &c. The universal couplings may be connected to the driving axles of the wheels. Gear wheels may be on both sides of the shaft h.
