449,654. Rack driving-gear for rail vehicles. SCHWEIZERISCHE LOKOMOTIVUND MASCHINENFABRIK, Winterthur, Switzerland. Sept. 9,1935, No. 25021. Convention date, Sept. 8, 1934. [Class 79 (ii)] A combined adhesion and rack drive for rail vehicles in which a single motor drives at least one adhesion wheel axle n and at least one rack gear wheel h<1>, is characterized in that the motor a and all the gearing are rigidly supported by the frame b in which the adhesion axle n is journalled, and the axle n is connected by a universally-movable coupling m to a rotary part k driven by the gearing. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the rack gear wheel h<1> is loosely mounted on a hollow shaft i and is driven from the motor through a countershaft d and gears f<1>, g<1>. The adhesion wheel axle n is driven from the countershaft d through gears f2, and the coupling m which allows for the springing of the frame on the axle. The motor a drives the shaft d through a clutch r, spring coupling q and gears c<1>, c2. Two or more motors may be used. Modifications are described in which (1) the rack gear wheel h<1> is fixed to the hollow shaft i and drives the axle n through the coupling m, so that only one train of gears f<1>, g<1> is used, and (2) the adhesion wheel axle and the rack gear wheel are not concentric, but each has a separate gear wheel meshing with a common gear wheel on the countershaft d. In this construction a second rack gear-wheel may be provided normally concentric with the adhesion wheel axle.
