531,722. Rack and adhesion driving-gear for rail vehicles. SCHWEIZERISCHE LOKOMOTIV UND MASCHINENFABRIK. July 31, 1939, No. 22137. Convention date, Aug. 1, 1938. [Class 79 (ii)] In rail vehicles having combined rack and adhesion driving means the motor 1 drives the rack pinion 6 which is co-axial with the adhesion wheel axle 7 through gearing such as 2, 3 and 4, 5, and the axle 7 is driven from the gear 5 through a counter-shaft 10 having pinions 11, 12 in mesh respectively with'the gear 5 fixed to the rack pinion 6 and a gear 13 on the axle 7. Thus any inequalities in the drive due to wearing down of the tyres of the adhesion wheels 36 are taken up in the countershaft 10 and do not throw any extra'strain on the driving pinion 4. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the gears 4, 5, 11 and 12, 13 are contained in casings 14, 15 fixed to a bedplate 16 secured to the motor 1 and the motor and gear unit is mounted in bearings 17, 18 on the axle and supported at 19 on the spring-supported frame 20 provided between the motor 1 and pinion 2, and a similar clutch 23 between the pinion 11 and the shaft 10. A brakegear support 34 is provided on the plate 16. Modifications are described in which (1) the motor and gear casings are completely carried by the spring-supported frame, the rack pinion and the gear 13 being carried by a quill shaft loosely surrounding the axle, and the axle being driven by the gear 13 through a universal coupling, and (2) the motor has twin parallel driving shafts arranged above the axle 7, these shafts being connected to the rack pinion through two separate trains of gearing, but only one countershaft 10 being provided.
