Abstract

899,833. Mounting gears; locomotive driving gears. VOITH G.m.b.H., J. M. Oct. 16, 1959 [Nov. 12, 1958], No. 35161/59. Classes 79(2) and 79(3). A variable speed gear and fixed ratio transmission gearing of a locomotive are arranged as a unit which is resiliently mounted relatively to the rims of the driven wheels. A hydraulic transmission 6 having turbo units 8, 9 and 10 is formed as a unit with transmission gears 7 and 7<SP>1</SP> having a final drive to a bevel gear 11 mounted on a quill shaft 12. The wheels are mounted on axles 17 carried by springs 15 and flanges upon the axle are connected to the wheels by resilient members 13 which support the driving unit and transmit the drive. The driving unit is connected by a cardan shaft 5 to an I.C. engine 4. In a modification, Fig. 5, a flanged member 120 is connected to the shafts 117 and by resilient members 113 to the quill shaft 112, As shown in Fig. 6, the drive unit may be supported upon bearings 221 on the axles 217 to which the final drive is transmitted through a bevel gear 211, the wheels comprising a resilient member 222 or series of resilient blocks between the wheel 214 and rim 223. In a further modification, Fig. 7, the drive unit is rotatably mounted upon a quill shaft to which the drive is transmitted, a flange thereof being connected by resilient blocks 313 to the wheel 314. The drive unit may be connected by a shaft 425 to an unsprung wheel 427 (Fig. 8) or to a pair of unsprung wheels 526, 526<SP>1</SP> (Fig. 10). The drive unit may combine the drives from two I.C. engines 604, 604<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 11, or the drive from one I.C. engine 704 may be split to drive two units 706, 706a, Fig. 12. The engine may be mounted upon the frame 818 of the bogey, Fig. 13, and connected to the driving unit through a cardan shaft 805, or may be combined with the drive unit 906, Fig. 14. As shown in Fig. 15, the engine 1004 is mounted upon the main frame and the driving unit 1006 is connected to the bogey frame 1018 carried by springs 1015, there being resilient torque transmitting means as in Fig. 7. In Fig. 16, the engine and drive unit are carried by the main frame.
