Abstract

856,679. Locomotives. SCHWEIZERISCHE LOKOMOTIV-UND MASCHINENFABRIK. Oct. 16, 1958 [Oct. 29, 1957], No. 33021/58. Classes 79(1) and 79(2). The drive to the axles of a locomotive mounted on bogies having at least three axles is transmitted from an internal combustion engine located in the main frame through one set of distributer gears 21..26 for each bogie to a torque converter 27 and a gear train for each axle, the gear train including a changespeed gear, a reversing gear and a spur and pinion axle drive and the drive from the distributer gears being the same for each axle. In a locomotive having two six-wheeled bogies, each bogie axle is driven through a spur wheel reduction gear 44, Fig. 2, a reversing gear 40, a propeller shaft 12, a two-speed gearbox 33 having hydraulically-actuated friction clutches, and a torque converter 27, the input shafts of the converters being driven by the gears 21 ..26, Fig. 6, from the internal combustion engine. The bogie frame 4 is connected by swing links 3, Fig. 3, to bolster springs provided with arcuate sliders 15 to support the body 1. A kingpin 48 carried by a gear casing 7 in the frame 4 and connected by a ball-and-socket joint with a slide in a transom 50 transmits inertia forces between the bogie and the vehicle body. Fig. 8 shows an eight-wheeled bogie in which the input shafts of four hydraulic converters 55 are driven by gears 54 from a central gear on the shaft of an internal combustion engine, the output from each converter being connected to a bogie axle by a two-speed gear-box 56, a propeller shaft 57 and a reversing gear 59 having a symmetrical input shaft 60 so that each pair of wheels may be used in any position on the bogie. Two king- pins 61 (Fig. 10 not shown) are connected to the vehicle body by ball-and-socket joints and sliders having longitudinal play in their transoms so that tractive forces are transmitted through the pin behind the bogie centre while braking forces are transmitted through the pin in front of the bogie centre.
