Abstract

961,650. Diesel locomotives. SULZER BROS. Ltd. April 11, 1963 [April 11, 1962], No. 14611/63. Headings B7H and B7L. In a locomotive comprising a pair of bogies 14 and a single diesel engine 1, each end of the engine crank-shaft is connected by a flexible coupling 7 and a connecting shaft 8 to an hydraulic transmission unit 11 having two longitudinal output shafts 18, 19 connected by bevel gears 20, 39 and 20<SP>1</SP>, 39<SP>1</SP> to spur gearing 21, 22, 24, 25, 26, 27 driving the wheels 28, 29, 30 of the associated bogey 14. The two output shafts 18, 19 may be constituted by a single shaft incorporating a resilient coupling. The spur gears 22, 26, 24 drive the wheels 28, 29, 30 through universally flexible spring drives 41, and the spur gear may all be disposed on one side of the bogey or the gears connecting the wheels 28, 29 and the wheels 29, 30 may be arranged on opposite sides (Figs. 5, 6, not shown). Each transmission unit 11 is centrally mounted in the respective bogey 14 on supports 13, and includes one or more hydraulic torque converters, mechanical transmission gearing, an hydraulic clutch and a mechanical reversing gear. The connecting shafts 8 include Hooketype couplings 12 or ball-type universal couplings 12, as shown, or couplings may be provided which are torsionally resilient and can accommodate misalignments wherein the shaft axes are non-intersecting. The frame of each bogey 14 is supported by spring 15 on the bearing blocks 16 of each axle, and members 37 suspended from the bogey frame by swing bars 34 support the locomotive frame 3 by means of spring elements 33. Traction links 43 extend between the bogies 14 and the locomotive frame 3. The engine 1 is mounted on the frame 3 by flexible bearings 2, and the locomotive includes an exhaust chamber 5 and a cooling system 6 comprising fans 6<SP>1</SP>. In another construction (Fig. 7, not shown), each bogey comprises two driving axles only.
