Abstract

763,437. Motor vehicle driving gear. ROVER CO., Ltd. Oct. 12, 1953 [Oct. 21, 1952], No. 26386/52. Class 79(2). [Also in Groups XXIV and XXXII] In a road vehicle power transmission wherein the propulsive and braking efforts are transmitted to the front and rear road wheels through propeller shafts g, h interconnected by a coupling r permitting relative rotation of the shafts at a slow rate, the coupling parts (see Group XXXII) are operatively interconnected by a viscous fluid medium The slow rate of relative rotation of the shafts g, h permitted by the coupling is from 3 to 30 r.p.m. As shown in Figs. 1 and 1a the vehicle engine a drives through a variable speed gear b and gearing c the planet carrier d of a differential gear whose sun gears f are carried by the shafts g, h connected by differential gears n, q, to front and rear wheel half shafts k, o. The planet carrier d carries a brake disc j, brake application being effected by hydraulically operated friction pads w. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown) the differential gear is omitted and the gearing c directly drives the shaft h, the shafts g, h being interconnected by the coupling r and the brake disc j being carried by the shaft g. Specification 738,295 is referred to.
